The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English at Booth University College is a flexible interdisciplinary program. Combine an English major with a Film Studies minor to unite your passion for film and theatre with your love for reading, writing, and language. The opportunities are abundant. 

Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in English and Film Studies can be completed in:

  • 3 years (90 credit hours)
  • 4 years (120 credit hours)

To study English and film is to study people's stories. Stories help us understand what our society values most at any given time.

Explore British, American, Canadian, and other texts from the past and present. Learn from a variety of cultural contexts and consider issues that shape human culture. Topics like the history of political unrest, gender and sexual politics, and environmental destruction are relevant for anyone interested in shaping culture today.

Unique courses include ENG 360 Mass Media and Society and ENG 320 Trauma Literature. The Film Studies stream offer courses in film adaptation and genre. You'll have opportunities to tell your own stories through filmmaking.

This program will help you develop critical thinking, writing and presentation skills that are beneficial in a wide variety of careers. As the job market evolves in unforeseen ways, you'll have the skills to adapt. 

Minor in English

  • ENG107: Representative Literary Works
  • 12 credits in general courses, including:
    • at least 6 credits in literature prior to the Twentieth Century
    • ENG280 Literary and Cultural Theory

Minor in Film

  • FLM 110 Introduction to Film Studies
  • FLM 120 Intro to Film History
  • 12 credits in general courses, including:
    • FLM380 Film Theory

This program is currently open to all students on a direct entry basis. After 60 credit hours of study, students must meet a minimum GPA of 2.0 and Grade C in all discipline courses to continue in the program. 

3 Year (90 credit) Requirements

  • 90 credit hours
  • 42 credit hours in the core curriculum
  • At least 30 credit hours in the discipline (including those taken in the core curriculum, but not including ENG100)
    • 3 credit hours of ENG280: Literary Theory
    • 3 credit hours of ENG395: Selected Themes in English Literature. 
  • At least 9 credits at 300 level or higher.

4 Year (120 credit) Requirements

  • 120 credit hours
  • 42 credit hours in the core curriculum
  • 48 credit hours in the discipline (including those taken in the core curriculum, but not including ENG100)
    • ENG280: Literary Theory
    • At least one Special Topics course
    • ENG395: Selected Themes in English Literature
    • The 499 Integration Capstone
    • At least 12 credits in literature prior to the Twentieth Century
  • At least 9 credits at 300 level or higher.
