Co-op Work Permit for International Students

Certain programs offered at Booth UC have a required co-op, internship, or practicum component for program completion. International students in these programs will need a co-op permit, regardless if it is paid or unpaid. The co-op permit is typically issued for the length of the study permit, if students need to apply for a study permit extension, a co-op permit extension may be applied for at the same time.

What is a Co-op Work Permit?

A co-op work permit is a mandatory document that allows you to work as part of your academic program in Canada. It is separate from your Study Permit and your Social Insurance Number (SIN). You cannot begin your internship/placement without it.

Who Needs It?

You need this permit if your program of study requires a work placement (internship, practicum, field placement) to graduate. It is for mandatory co-ops, not optional ones.

Key Eligibility:

  • Your co-op/internship is required for your degree (usually 50% or less of your program).
  • You have a valid Study Permit.
  • You have a letter from your university confirming all students in your program must complete a work placement to graduate.

When and How to Apply?

Apply as soon as you receive your official co-op/internship letter from the Registrar. This is issued to the student upon request. Be mindful of the processing time.

Gather Your Documents:

  • Valid Passport (scanned copy)
  • Valid Study Permit (scanned copy)
  • Official Letter from Institution: This must state that a work placement is mandatory for all students in your program. (Contact the Registrar to request this).
  • Digital Photo (as per IRCC specifications).

Apply Online:

  • Log in to your IRCC secure account or create one, if needed.
  • Go to "Start an application" and click "Apply to come to Canada."
  • Answer the questionnaire. It will generate a document checklist for a "Co-op Work Permit."
  • Upload all required documents and pay the standard work permit processing fee.
  • Biometrics: You may need to give biometrics, however, if you’ve given them for a previous application (like your Study Permit), they are likely still valid as they last for up to 10 years.
