2013 YOUTH AND COMMUNITY FORUMS:
GANGS AND HOPE
This is the fourth year that Booth University College is hosting its annual Youth and Community Forums. Designed to facilitate guided community dialogue around a pressing issue affecting the residents of Winnipeg, the topic for this year’s forums is Gangs and Hope.

This year’s Community Forum will bring together Booth UC faculty, the public and a panel of experts and leading community representatives to delve deep into the issue of gang activity and gang life in Winnipeg. Participants will gain a better understanding of the underlying causes that attract youth to gang life, will explore misconceptions and will discuss possible solutions to help today’s youth exit gang life or prevent them from getting involved in the first place. In addition to a panel discussion and question and answer session, participants will see a special student-led skit presentation and the winner of the Youth Forum Student Essay Competition will be announced.

Youth Forum: Gangs and Hope

This year’s youth forum will provide high school students with an opportunity to learn about gang life – the pathways in and the pathways out. From hearing about the harsh realities of gang life to learning about the struggles members face when they want to break free, students will walk away from this special one-day event educated, empowered and inspired to make a difference. It addition to hearing personal stories connected to gang life and hearing from front-line practitioners who work with Winnipeg’s at-risk youth, students will have the opportunity to take part in classes and break-out sessions with Booth UC faculty as well as representatives from leading community organizations. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in a Youth Forum Student Essay Competition, with a $200 prize going to the first-place winner.
